Dihydroxyacetone (DHA) is a colourless by-product of sugar cane, 100% natural and completely safe, approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) and the Skin Cancer Foundation in the US, and accepted by the Spanish Ministry for Health and the Spanish Association of Cosmetic Medicine and Surgery (AEMCC).
DHA is a compound which generates a natural and immediate tanning reaction when it comes into contact with the skin's proteins. The tan is instantly visible after misting, and increases in intensity over the following hours, and is kept approximately for one week. As it reacts on the stratum corneum, the outermost part of the epidermis, the DHA does not penetrate into the skin, thereby preventing the risk of allergic reactions.
It is important to note that melanin (the only natural protection human skin has against ultraviolet rays) is not involved in this process.
It is also important to stress that DHA is not a dye or a pigment, unlike the classic self-tanning lotions, so everyone achieves their natural tan, without any orangey streaks.
Skin regenerates completely every 28 days, and the superficial layers of the skin (which account for almost 25%) are exfoliated and renewed naturally every 7-10 days. This explains why this type of tanning lasts between 7 and 10 days, depending on the moisturising and care applied.
The tan will not disappear in the shower. Like a natural tan, it will lose its intensity gradually with the natural flaking of the skin's stratum corneum, disappearing after about a week.
